Dean Robertson out to
-
nurture Patrick
-
Spraggs' talent

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING
By DAVID CHRISTIE
Former European Tour professional Dean Robertson has vowed to dedicate his time to University of Stirling emerging star Patrick Spraggs.
Spraggs, a first year Sports Studies scholar at Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence, won the 2010 R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament - victory bringing with it a place on the European Team for the Palmer Cup match against the United States in Northern Ireland.
Robertson, the European team coach, watched Spraggs pull away from the rest of the field at St Andrews' Castle Course to win comfortably and was then looking on as the 19-year-old finished a creditable fourth at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Individual Strokeplay final over the Dundonald Links last week.
Spraggs is the only Scottish-based golfer to be named among the eight European students who will take on their American counterparts at Royal Portrush County Golf Club from June 24 to 26.
And Robertson, who along with his assistant Walle Danewid, coached the Europe Palmer Cup team to victory at Cherry Hills last year, is keen to help Spraggs flourish.
He said: "Having won on the European Tour and also played in the Walker Cup, I bring a lot of experience for the guys to tap into and my primary focus is Patrick. I've watched him twice now and his game is most impressive so I'm sure he is going to fit in well with our team.
"There is no doubt he has the talent, but now we need to nurture it so he can prevail on what will be the biggest platform for his game to date. The aim is for him, in terms of his golf, to arrive a boy and leave a man.
"Royal Portrush is one of the best and toughest links in the world and the players will require a lot of craft - it's not just about power. Many of the Americans we faced last year will still be eligible. They went on to play in the Walker Cup team which demolished Europe and I expect the USA team to be very strong."
At the BUCS event, a final-round 72 left Spraggs, supported by a Winning Students scholarship, to rue an earlier round of 81 - the only blot on his copybook in a 295 total over 72 holes.
His performance, combined with that of David Booth (9th), Alex Culverwell (14th) and Bobby Rushford (15th), ensured the University of Stirling ran away with the team title (pictured above).
Spraggs, from Westhorpe in Suffolk, said: "My second round was disappointing and so while I'm happy to have finished fourth, I'm a little frustrated as I feel I could have won it. But on the whole I'm playing well at the moment so I can't complain.
"I'm hitting more greens and using my head a bit more rather than going gung-ho. It is great for Stirling to win the team title. Everyone gets on really well and it is a great set-up so even practising is fun. The camaraderie helps us all to play better and win tournaments."
Other Stirling students' finishing positions at Dundonald Links:
Men - Colin Baird (18th), Colin Thomson (22nd), Andrew Wallace (25th), Fraser Moore (34th) and Graeme Robertson (36th).
Women - Rebecca Wilson (4th) and Harriet Beasley (12th).

JANE TURNER RETAINS BRITISH STUDENT
-
WOMEN'S STROKE-PLAY GOLF TITLE

Aberdeen student Jane Turner has won the British Universities & Colleges' women's stroke-play golf championship for the second year in a row.
A full Scotland international team player, Jane, who is a second year graphic design student at Robert Gordon University and a member of Craigielaw Golf Club, had rounds of 76, 74, 75 and 74 for a total of 299 over a demanding Dundonald Links women's course which had a CSS of 76-76-75-76 (303).
Turner won the title at Hollinwell, Notts 12 months ago.
One shot behind the pacemaking Sian James (Birmingham) overnight, Jane moved into the lead for the first time when she birdied the dogleg 17th hole with a pitch-and-a-putt in the final round.
Turner is now hoping to pull off what would be a superb title double on Ayrshire links. Next weekend she is in the star-studded international field for the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
"The Ayrshire coast is great for me. I have improved every game this season and hope that this sets me up for what is to come this season," she said.
This will include a trip to the FISU World University Championships at Malaga, Spain, in early June.
Turner finished a shot ahead of Lucy Williams (Birmingham) (80-73-73-74) with Sian James (Birmingham) third on 301 with rounds of 75, 75, 73 and 78.
Monifieth's Rebecca Wilson (Stirling) finished a creditable fourth on 312 with scores of 80, 76, 74 an d82.
Ladybank member Susan Jackson (Edinburgh) finished joint sixth on 319 with scores of 85, 80, 78 and 76.
The British universities men's stroke-play title for the Wollaton Park Trophy was won by Nicky Maddison (University of Northumbria) who was playing on the American college circuit at this time last year.
Maddison, who gave his leading rivals a start with a first-round 79, came roaring back into contention with scores of 69, 70 and 72 for a total of two-over-par 290 to win by three shots from Northumbrian team-mate Ross Crowe.
Nicky, a first year computer studies student from Newcastle, joined the University of Northumbria last September, having previously studied at Hutchinson Community College, in Kansas City where he was their star golfer.
A member of Newcastle Golf Club with a handicap of +1, Nicky felt that the best representing the part of his 72 holes was his his ability to recover from a "disappointing" 79 on the first day to shoot "very solid golf" for the remaining three rounds.
Previously, St Andrews boys' open champion in 2008, Nicky said:
"Scotland's pretty lucky for me. I am really very happy with this result". Asked what his ambitions were for the rest of the season, Nicky said "I intend to practise hard and see where I go."
This will include a trip to the FISU World University Championships at Malaga.
Top Scottish-based student was England's Patrick Spraggs (Stirling University), recent winner of the R&A Scholars' men's title at St Andrews. Patrick finished fifth on 295 with scores of 72, 81, 780 and 72. He finished two shots ahead of the leading Scot, Aberdeen's John Duff who came sixth on 297 with scores of 74, 75, 74 and 74.

English students in the driving
-
seat at Dundonald Links

English students are in the driving seat in both the men's and women's championships with one round to go of the British Universities & Colleges' 72-hole stroke-play golf championships Dundonald Links, Ayrshire on Thursday afternoon.
Nicky Maddison (Northumbria University), pictured, who played last year on the US college circuit, leads the men's title race with a two-over-par, three-round total of 218 - which represents quite a comeback from an opening round of seven-over 79. He has tagged on very good sub-par scores of 69 and 70 to lead by one shot from team-mate Ross Crowe with Scots John Wybar (Aberdeen) and Steven Smith (Heriot Watt) in third and joint fourth positions on 221 and 222.
There are four Scots sharing sixth place on 223 - R&A Bursars champion Patrick Spraggs (Stirling), Colin Thomson (Stirling), John Duff (Aberdeen) and Alex Culverwell (Stirling) - so perhaps a Scottish last-round charge is on the cards.
Sian James (Birmingham), winner of the R&A Bursars' ladies' title last year, is making all the running in the students' women's championship.
She has had rounds of 75, 75 and 73 for 223, leading Jane Turner (Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen), a Scotland international and the defending champion, by two shots. Jane has scored 76, 74 and 75 over what is a tough track for the men - and even tougher for the women.
Monifieth's Scotland girl cap Rebecca Wilson (Stirling) is in fourth place on 230 with rounds of 80 76 and 74.

Kelsey Macdonald wins women's title at

R&A Foundation Scholars' Tournament

Patrick Spraggs has won the 2010 R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament,
after a final round of 70 on St Andrews’ Castle Course left him five
clear of the field. The 19-year-old will now take his place on the
European Team to face the USA at the Palmer Cup, a student
international match which, this year, will be held at Royal Portrush in
Northern Ireland.
The Stirling University student was tied for the lead going into today’
s (Tuesday) final round having shot 71 and 68 around the Eden Course
the previous day. He quickly accelerated away with birdies on four and
five before eagling the par-5, 555-yard 15th courtesy of a four-iron
struck to within two feet. And to round off his victory, he got up and
down well on the 18th for birdie to complete an emphatic victory.
“This is the biggest university event I’ve played in by far,” said
Spraggs, who is in his first year as a Foundation Scholar. “I said to
the guys on the first tee, “This is going to be so hard” but I think we
got the best of the conditions and it all came together for me.
“Opportunities like playing in the Palmer Cup don’t come along every
day, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Spraggs’ round of 70, however, was only the second-best round of the
day. That honour went to Kelsey MacDonald, who, remarkably, posted a
three-under-par 68 to finish on a total of 214, winning the women’s
competition and tying for second place overall.
In what was undoubtedly the round of the Tournament, the 19-year-old
made five birdies, two going out and three coming back, one of them
coming at the 312-yard 14th after she found the green from the tee.
“To be honest, I didn’t really know where I was going as it’s not a
course I’ve spent much time on, so I think that made me play a bit
slower – I’m normally quite a quick player. And I focused a bit more,
especially on the greens,” explained Stirling University’s Macdonald,
who is aiming to secure a place on Europe’s Curtis Cup Team to face the
USA at Essex County Club, Massachusetts, in June.
“I’m looking forward to playing the Ladies European Tour Event, which,
I think, will be at Archerfield. I’ve played in the Scottish Open
before, when it was held at Carrick, so I can’t wait to have another
go.”
Full coverage of Spraggs’ Palmer Cup appearance, along with MacDonald’
s Ladies European Tour start, will appear on randa.org in due course.

Kelsey misses Scottish universities' championship
-

at Lossie for Paris trip to play in French U-21s

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar & Stirling University), Scottish Under-21 champion for the past two years, is not in the field for next week’s Scottish universities women’s championship over the Moray Golf Club Old and New Courses at Lossiemouth.
She has accepted an invitation from the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association to fly to Paris on Monday and take part in the French Under-21 girls open amateur championship at St Cloud from April 1 to 5.
Kelsey is a member of the GB&I Curtis Cup preliminary squad and a good performance in what is always a top-class field for the "French," will impress the Ladies Golf Union selectors more than doing well in the Scottish universities championship.
In Kelsey’s absence, the player with the lowest handicap in the Lossiemouth field for the women’s university title is Scotland international team-mate Jane Turner (Craigielaw & Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen) who plays off +2.
But a third member of the Scotland team will be playing at Lossiemouth – Scottish champion Megan Briggs, who is a student at Strathclyde University. Megan has a rating of +1.
Another strong contender would be Gemma Bradbury, a one-handicapper who was a member of the title-winning Wales team at the women’s home internationals at Irvine Golf Club last September. Teenager Gemma, a member at Cottrell Park Golf Club, Cardiff, is now a a student at St Andrews University.
Last year’s Scottish universities women’s champion was Laura Murray (Alford and Robert Gordon University). She has since left university.
Draw for the first two rounds over the Moray Old Course on Sunday, March 28 and the New Course on Monday, March 29 is (players’ handicaps in brackets):
1.0 and 3.22: Felicity Lloyd-Jones (St Andrews) (9), Nicola Robinson (Edinburgh) (10), Eleanor Pike (St Andrews (10).
1.07 and 3.15: Eilidh Mackay (Stirling) (7), Alison McGarity (Strathclyde) (5), Ashley Smith (St Andrews) (6).
1.15 and 3.07: Jennifer Linklater (St Andrews) (6), Gillian Arnott (Strathclyde) (5), Isla Craigie (Edinburgh) (5).
1.22 and 3.0: Jordana Graham (Stirling) (4), Dorothea Bouck-Standen (Strathclyde) (4), Mikela Nordblad (St Andrews) (5).
1.30 and 2.52: Megan Jones (St Andrews) (3), Rachel Cassidy (Stirling) (2), Emma Fairnie (Edinburgh) (1).
1.37 and 2.45: Megan Briggs (Strathclyde) (+1), Rebecca Wilson (Stirling) (2), Ailsa Theunis (St Andrews) (3).
1.45 and 2.37: Jane Turner (Robert Gordon Univ) (+2), Gemma Bradbury (St Andrews) (1), Susan Jackson (Edinburgh) (1).
+Leading eight plus ties qualify to play on Tuesday afternoon.

Cambridge win 13th Ladies’ Varsity Golf Match

NEWS RELEASE
Early on the beautiful morning of the 16th of March the ladies of the Oxford and Cambridge golf teams gathered on the first tee at the splendid Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. The event that brought them together was the 13th Ladies’ Varsity Golf match, the year’s instalment of the annual game between the rival Universities.
The event has been taking place since the inaugural Ladies’ Varsity match was held at Walton Heath in 1998. After a strong showing by Oxford in the early years of the fixture, Cambridge has enjoyed several recent successes. However, never before has the game been held at Royal Porthcawl, despite the course’s popularity as a venue for the men’s Varsity match.
The course is a classic links, providing golfers with many challenges with its strategically placed bunkers, fairway contouring, lightening fast greens and strong Atlantic gales. In addition, golfers are routinely mesmerised by the spectacular views to Somerset and Exmoor in the South and across Swansea Bay to the Gower Peninsula.
The format of the match has three pairs from each University playing foursomes, and the reserves playing singles in the morning, and six individual matches taking place in the afternoon.
First out in the morning were Cambridge captain Louisa Tarn and her partner Michaela Bacon who took on Jane Han and Min-Yee Tseu of Oxford. Despite putting up a gallant fight the Oxford team lost out to a more experienced opposition on the 14th with Tarn holing a stunning chip for birdie.
The third match saw four times Varsity veteran Katie Taylor and partner Livia McBride play consistent strong golf against an Oxford pair who were punished by some poor ball positioning on the tough links course. Cambridge clinched their match against Jen Hauschild and Amy Bilderbeck on the 13th.
The second match however was fought to a competitive finish on the 17th. Despite an early lead for Oxford captain Gillian Kinnear and her partner Alex Walvis, Leanne Mullen and Hiliary Crowe fought back with a strong showing on the second nine.
However, Oxford’s lead proved too much for the Cambridge pair to claw back and a holed putt on the 17th brought Oxford their first point of the day.
Also in the morning, the reserve match was fought to a tight finish. Both Lucy Webb-Wilson of Oxford and Lucy Ackrill of Cambridge played stunning golf with the former Lucy closing the game with a win for Oxford on the 18th.
With a 2-1 lead as the teams went in for lunch, Cambridge needed three points in the afternoon to guarantee their win. Louisa Tarn brought the first of these home in her game against Jane Han. The Cambridge captain’s wealth of experience and talent was too much for her opponent who played great golf but, as a much more recent convert to the game, proved no match for Tarn who closed the game on the 10th hole.
However, the tide was soon to turn with Gillian Kinnear and Min Yee Tseu of Oxford taking early victories against their opponents Hiliary Crowe and Cambridge ex-captain Leanne Mullen respectively.
Kinnear brought home an 8 and 6 win in an amiable match against her old friend while Tseu, Oxford’s most recent addition, dazzled crowds with huge hitting to win on the 14th against a strong opponent.
With Alex Walvis of Oxford looking likely to bring in a win, having achieved a four-hole lead through nine holes against her opponent Livia McBride, the Dark Blue side were hopeful. However, the tide was to turn once again as McBride’s accurate and consistent golf and level head allowed her to fight back to achieve a spectacular half on the 18th.
All eyes were now on the final two games in the field. Each team was praying for a final 1½pt to secure their victory. Jen Hauschild fought back from four down against Cambridge’s Katie Taylor to be one down as the pair walked down the stunning 18th hole.
However, Hauschild was unable to achieve the necessary win on the last hole against the solid, unfaltering golf of Taylor and with a further win Cambridge clocked their tally up to 4½ points. The final game was to prove as nail-bitingly close as Oxford’s ex-captain Amy Bilderbeck fought against a strong Michaela Bacon. The result was decided on the 17th where Bacon went dormie one up to ensure at least half a point. Nonetheless, both continued fighting on the last hole and Bacon held on to achieve Cambridge’s final point of the day.
With a final score of 5½ Cambridge, 3½ Oxford, the stronger Light Blue side brought the trophy back to Cambridge for the fourth year in a row. The nail-biting game was enjoyed by a great many spectators who were as pleased as the players with the perfect conditions.
The course spent the day bathed in sunlight and the clear skies allowed all to indulge in the fabulous views. Most importantly, everyone gathered at Royal Porthcawl was treated to some excellent golf, with both teams putting out some of the best performances ever seen in the Ladies’ Varsity match and all competitors exhibiting excellent sportsmanship.
The narrow line between competition and fun was trodden expertly by all the ladies who entered the game in the perfect spirits. All in all, the day was a resounding success and we all look forward to next year!

A small fee which will go to a worthy cause. It is of course at the discretion of the player if they take part in this initiative, a simple donation can be made as well. You will be prompted upon check-in if you want to take part or not.
Should you wish to learn more about Barnardo’s and their work with Universities and Colleges please contact Emma Cairns on 0131 314 6653 or at emma.cairns@barnardos.org.uk. There is also further information about our work on our website which can be found at http://www.barnardos.org.uk/.’

Scot has no ambition to turn pro before college days in California are over

Sally Watson to stay at university for four years

FROM THE NEW ISSUE OF THE STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA MAGAZINE
Scotland's Sally Watson, 18, freshman golfer. From that simple, roster-like listing flows quite a tale. To start with, Watson's presence at Stanford University is a coup, given that many consider her talented enough to consider turning professional now.
Watson, who made an international impression playing for the Great Britain and Ireland team in the 2008 Curtis Cup over the Old Course, St Andrews, says she wants the full experience of being a student-athlete at Stanford. "It's definitely my plan to stay for the four years."
Moreover, she's being billed a team leader. Stanford gets a fair share of competitively advanced frosh, but leadership is typically reserved to upperclassmen. "She's going to lead by example," says Caroline O'Connor, women's head coach. "She's going to speak her mind and push others to work harder." Not to mention whatever spark she provides just by playing.
Then there's a quality that doesn't always go hand in hand with natural ability at Watson's age: maturity. She talks with notable poise, for instance, about how formidable it would have been to turn pro—about how self-reliant and career-intense she would have needed to be, perhaps even to the point of an oppressive maturity.
"It's just a huge step," she says. "College is the last stage in your life where you don't necessarily have any worries. You still want to get A's, but you also have some freedom to be a little kid."
Watson's talent is a more complex topic. There's an obvious here-and-now to some of her skills, perhaps best demonstrated when she won three of five matches at the Curtis Cup, which pits the United States against Great Britain and Ireland in a competition for amateur girls and women. But her potential generates even more excitement.
That kind of rapid progression is special, says O'Connor. "She's a true student of the game, and she works at it like the best players in the country do."
Watson, a native of Edinburgh, lived in Scotland until she was nine then spent a few years in Orinda, when her father's work took the family to the Bay Area (San Francisc). She returned to Scotland for a while and then attended high school in Florida, where she got golf instruction at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy.
She had grown devoted to basketball until suffering a knee injury at 12; it was only then that she turned to golf in a serious way. Within just a few years she was showing off a swing that suggested a big future. In 2007, at 16, she made the cut at the Women's British Open and tied for 50th.
In Golfweek's preseason analysis of college teams, Watson was named to the third of three top-10 lists for women players, making her the only Stanford representative and just one of four freshmen rated among the top 30 selections in the country.
In her debut with the Stanford University Cardinals, Watson finished a little below the middle of the pack at the end of a rain-shortened, two-round event. But in the second of three fall tourneys, she was in contention to win, ultimately finishing fifth. At the Stanford Intercollegiate in mid-October, she tied for 51st in a field of 81.
As the year concluded, she was focused on her putting. "I think I can hole putts when I need to," she says. "It's the putting I'm doing in between that needs improvement, if that makes sense. I need to hole them more frequently."
Maybe Watson will be a golfer who's at her best when she's most in need of a clutch shot. "She manages stress on the golf course very well," says O'Connor. "When her back is against the wall, she's the one who wants to step up and perform."

at Northern Ireland venue

The Golf Coaches Association of America has appointed Chris Zambri to be coach of the United States team for this year's transatlantic international students' match for the Palmer Cup.
The Americans have lost the last two matches.
Zambri (pictured) is head golf coach at the University of South Carolina.
The Europe v United States match will be held at Royal Portrush Golf Club, Co Antrim in Northern Ireland venue from June 24 to 26.
The Americans lost 13-11 last June at Cherry Hills CC, Denver, to a European students' team coached by Dean Robertson.
The last time the Palmer Cup match was held on this side of the Atlantic, Europe won 14-10 at Glasgow Gailes.
The two sides are 6-6-1 in the competition's first 13 years although Europe has a 5-2 record since 2003.

World university championships at Malaga in early June

The world university golf championships will be played at Malaga, Spain from June 7 to 11.
There are plenty of courses in the Malaga region and probably two will be required to stage the men's and women's championships.
We'll keep you posted.
One thing is certain, no Curtis Cup team players from either side of the Atlantic will be competing in the world university championships. The Curtis Cup, hosted by Essex County Club, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, will be played from June 11 to 13.

Scottish Universities' Ladies Golf League

gets going at Scotscraig, Dundonald next

By SUZIE McINALLY
The Scottish Universities Ladies Golf League played its first competition of the year at Scotscraig Golf Club, Tayport in Fife on Sunday.
It was a great test of golf for all abilities and fortunately we had a much better day than we had expected weather wise. We were lucky after torrential downpour and 75 mph winds on Saturday night to have no rain at Scotscraig and only a moderate breeze.
The field consisted of 33 players from eight universities with a healthy mix of low, middle and high handicaps, and the results were as mixed as the field!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scotscraig Golf Club for their assistance, both on Sunday and in the lead-up to the competition. They were fantastic and could not have been more help.
The course was in awesome condition and, quite honestly, a joy to play. The food was great and the bar staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Extra credit should go to Barrie Liddle, the managing secretary, and Alison Harvey, Barrie's assistant, without whom we would not have been able to play the competition.
I would especially like to thank Susan Jackson from Edinburgh and Eleanor Pike from St Andrews who did a bit of running around for me last week and Katie Marshall from Glasgow who consented to going out last to get the girls started so that I could go first and collate the cards when the rest of the field returned. It's all about teamwork!
I hope that this is the start of a great year for Scottish Universities Ladies Golf, and with our new found alliance with the SLGA, I hope that we can go from strength to strength.
The next Stableford will be held at Dundonald Links on Sunday, November 8 and I require the final entries in by Friday, October 30, so if you have any additional ladies to add please do so as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact me either through E-mail, or on my mobile (07917 584063).

JAMES WHITE AND SUSAN JACKSON TOP OF THE CLASS AT
LADYBANK STUDENTS' ORDER OF MERIT COMPETITION

James White, Andrew Wallace and Bobby Rushford provided a Stirling University 1-2-3 finish to the men's section while Susan Jackson (Edinburgh University) prevented another Stirling success in the women's category of the Scottish Universities Golf Order of Merit stroke-play event at Ladybank.
Former Scottish boys champion White, a member of Lundin Golf Club, Fife, had two classy rounds of 68 and 66 for an eight-under-par total of 134.
He won by five shots from Andrew Wallace (69-70) with Bobby Rushford (72-69) third on 141.
Susan Jackson, playing over her home Ladybank course, spreadeagled the women's field with a brilliant opening round of two-under-par 69. She cooled off a little with a second-round 77 for 146 but still won by six shots from Stirling University's Irish international player Rachel Cassidy (80-72) with Gemma Bradbury (St Andrews University), who helped Wales retain the women's home internationals title at Irvine last month, in third place with scores of 74 and 81 for 155.
Stirling A won the men's team title by 24 strokes. They were represented by James White, Andrew Wallace, Bobby Rushford and Colin Thomson.

Tight at the top in Boyd Quaich

students' event at St Andrews

It’s a three-way tie for the lead with one round left to play in the Boyd Quaich Memorial students’ international golf tournament.
Will Bowman (North Carolina), Matthew Williams (Aston University) and Gordon Stevenson (University of St Andrews) lead the field at 215 (one over par) with 18 holes on the Old Course to go.
Two rounds were played on Wednesday and at halfway it was Gordon Stevenson who held a six-shot lead after he added a level par 72 on the Old Course to his blistering first round 64 on the par 71 New Course.
However, things went a little awry for Gordon in the third round as he scored 79 which brought him back to the chasing pack. The main damage was done on the ninth hole where a quadruple bogey 7 undid most of his hard work
Williams and Bowman shot 73 and 71 respectively on the New Course and that means that they will be in the final group on Thursday morning’s final round. Last year’s runner-up, Daniel Sommerville, is just 2 shots back on 217 after a fine 72 on the New. His round could have been much better as it included a lost ball on the par 5 eighth. Daniel managed to make an eagle with his second ball so no momentum was lost but it was a case of ‘what might have been’ at the end of the round.
The best rounds of the day came from Aaron O’Callaghan and Marco Cioffrese who both managed one-under 70. They now find themselves part of a six-strong chasing pack four shots adrift of the leaders.

Students' international tournament at St Andrews

Gordon Stevenson sets hot pace with

a 64 over New in 'Boyd Quaich'

First-round leader in the Boyd Quaich Memorial international students' golf tournament at St Andrews is Gordon Stevenson (St Andrews University) who scored a magnificent seven under par 64 on the New Course.
The format for the first two days means that the field of 72 players is split, with half playing the New and half playing the Old Course.
Stevenson's 64 included six birdies and an eagle with just one blemish on the card, courtesy of a bogey at the par 3 ninth hole. Kevin Duncan from Ellon, a student at Clayton State University, Atlanta, Georgia, had the next best score of 67 over the New.
The only other player to get unbder the par of 71 at the New Course was Daniel Sommerville (Dundee University).
The scoring on the Old was considerably higher with the best round of 71 coming from Matthew Williams from Aston University.
Next best was a par 72 from Nick Clark of Toronto.Shot of the day certainly belonged to Brighton's Adam Kyle who holed his second on the par 5 8th hole of the New Course. It was his first albatross. The leading 30 players after Wednesday's second round will qualify for the third and fourth rounds, which will begin in the afternoon.

25 men's team to

take world title

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Four women golfers from Birmingham University are the new world student match-play champions after they dismissed the challenge of 25 men’s teams to take the title.
They are: Lucy Williams, the English mid-amateur champion from Mid-Herts Golf Club, Sian James, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, from Bristol & Clifton in Gloucestershire, Charlotte Hope from Wrotham Heath, Kent, and Lauren Spray from Stanton on the Wolds in Nottinghamshire.
They were the only girls’ team in the event at Inglostadt in Munich which was contested by 26 teams from all around the world, including South Africa, the USA, the Netherlands, Sweden and France.
Lucy commented: “It was a massive achievement for Birmingham University as well as English women’s golf considering we were the only girls’ team playing! The girls led from the start. They were top qualifiers after the first day’s stroke-play, finishing three strokes ahead of the University of Manchester team.
In the semi-finals they beat the Warwick men’s team 3-1 and went on to face a German team, Erlangen-Nurnberg, in the foursomes match-play final. Lucy and Charlotte won their match 2 and 1 while Sian and Lauren finished one up.

Dean Robertson leads

Europe to victory over

US in Palmer Cup

FROM THE PALMER CUP WEBSITE
Europe stymied a late American rally to claim a 13-11 win at the 2009 Palmer Cup presented by Fisher Capital Partners at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
The victory was the Europeans' second in a row and their fourth in the last six annual contests. They won at Glasgow Gailes in 2008 and this was their second on American soil (they won at Kiawah Island in 2003). The win evened the all-time series, 6-6-1.
After splitting the morning’s foursomes matches - which left Europe needing only 2 1/2 points to retain the Palmer Cup, Europe roared out to big leads in each of the first three singles matches. Team USA briefly cut into Europe’s lead when Mike Van Sickle when he posted the largest singles victory in Palmer Cup history with an 8 and 7 win.
The Europeans quickly responded with a 5 and 4 victory by Stephan Gross and Jorge Campillo downing Bud Cauley, 2 and 1. Tim Sluiter looked poised to close out the matches after building a four-hole lead through four holes against Morgan Hoffmann and leading by the same margin after No. 12.
Hoffmann claimed four of the next five holes to move the match to all square after 17 with the Americans leading or all square in the remaining matches. However, Hoffmann’s tee shot on No. 18 went into the water to the left of the fairway and Sluiter made par to give Europe the team victory.
Cameron Tringale (1-up), Trent Leon (2 and 1) and Adam Mitchell (3 and 2) would claim wins for the U.S. while Italy’s Andrea Pavan and Erik Flores halved the final match for a final team score of 13-11.
“Our team played extremely well this week and had a tough fight today against the U.S.,” said Europe's head coach, Dean Robertson (pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency) from Scotland.
“It was a privilege to play at a course with the history of Cherry Hills and have Arnold Palmer in attendance all week.”
